Born and raised in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, Tom Protzek developed a passion for sports early in life. His athletic journey led him to the University of Tulsa, where he played Division I soccer from 2021 to 2023. During his collegiate years, Protzek demonstrated his versatility and skill on the field, contributing significantly to his team’s performance.
In 2024, while in New Mexico for a soccer tryout, he encountered a group playing pickleball at 7 a. m. Intrigued, he joined them and quickly realized his aptitude for the sport.
This serendipitous meeting marked the beginning of his transition from soccer to pickleball, a decision that would reshape his athletic career. Recognizing his potential, Protzek began dedicating time to mastering pickleball, balancing his soccer commitments with his newfound passion. His competitive nature and quick learning curve propelled him to consider professional play, setting the stage for his future in the sport.
In November 2024, Protzek made his professional pickleball debut at a PPA tournament, facing top-ranked players and gaining invaluable experience. His performance in this tournament, where he advanced to the Round of 16, underscored his readiness to compete at the highest levels. This early success fueled his determination to pursue a professional career in pickleball, leading him to join the PPA Tour in May 2025.
Since then, Protzek has been training full-time in Tulsa, Oklahoma, under the guidance of coach Wade Bryant. Despite the challenges of limited local practice partners, he has remained committed to his development, traveling to tournaments and seeking out training opportunities to refine his skills. His dedication and resilience have been evident in his performances on the PPA Tour, where he has secured main draw wins and consistently challenged top-seeded players.
Protzek’s playing style is characterized by his athleticism, grit, and fierce competitive spirit, traits that have quickly made him a player to watch on the professional circuit. As he continues to hone his skills and gain experience, he aims to break into the world’s Top 10 players, setting ambitious goals for his future in the sport. His journey from soccer to pickleball exemplifies the dynamic nature of professional sports and the opportunities for athletes to reinvent themselves and excel in new arenas.
