Altaf Merchant’s journey into professional sports began in India, where he was a top junior tennis player and represented his country in the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships. He also earned national and Masters tennis championships in India and played collegiate tennis for Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. In 2017, Merchant transitioned to pickleball, quickly rising through the ranks due to his strong tennis background.
His first U. S. Open was in 2018, marking the beginning of his successful pickleball career.
By 2021, he had become one of the top-ranked professional players, achieving a top 10 status in men’s doubles according to the Association of Pickleball Professionals. In 2023, Merchant achieved an impressive 59-0 record in the Men’s Senior Pro Doubles division, culminating in a gold medal at the USA National Championships in Texas. He also secured victories at major tournaments, including the Hyundai Masters, U.
S. Open, Tournament of Champions, and Nationals, all with his doubles partner Dayne Gingrich. Merchant’s dedication to the sport is evident in his rigorous training regimen, which focuses on fitness, power, and aggression to maintain a competitive edge.
His success has been recognized by peers, with fellow professional players acknowledging his achievements and congratulating him on his undefeated season. Off the court, Merchant serves as Senior Vice President of Investments and Senior Portfolio Manager at UBS Financial Services. He has been recognized on Forbes’ list of best financial advisors.
In 2021, he became the naming sponsor for Centre Court in Owensboro, demonstrating his commitment to giving back to the community that has supported him throughout his career.
