For most healthy recreational players the short answer is yes — with conditions attached that the wellness industry tends not to advertise.
A twelve-hour overnight fast followed by a moderate session is within the range of what a healthy, metabolically flexible adult can manage without meaningful concern. The body has glycogen reserves, the fast is short enough that depletion is partial rather than complete, and the metabolic crossover — the transition period between glucose and fat metabolism — is less pronounced than it becomes at longer durations.
The honest answer is that safety depends on variables the generic advice ignores: fast duration, session intensity, individual health profile, medication status, heat, and hydration.
A player who has fasted for twelve hours, plays for forty minutes at moderate intensity, is otherwise healthy, and drinks water throughout is in a different situation to a player who has fasted for eighteen hours, plays three hours of competitive open play in summer heat, and takes a diuretic for blood pressure. Both are technically playing pickleball while fasting. The physiological reality of those two situations has almost nothing in common.
When Is It Not Safe?
Medication is the most significant and least discussed factor. A substantial proportion of recreational pickleball players over 60 take medications that interact directly with fasting physiology and exercise demands. Diuretics accelerate fluid and electrolyte loss. Blood pressure medications affect cardiovascular response to exercise. Sodium, potassium, and magnesium — the minerals that regulate muscle contraction, nerve function, and cellular hydration — are excreted faster during fasting and lost further through sweat. The result can be cramps, dizziness, and cognitive fog.
Extended play duration is the third compounding factor. Forty minutes of social play is a different metabolic demand than three hours of open play. If your schedule makes this impossible and morning play during the fast is your only option, the practical compromise is straightforward: eat something small before you play. A banana or a handful of dates provides readily available carbohydrate that can support performance during the session. It breaks the technical fast, but the difference between a sixteen-hour fast and a fifteen-hour-and-forty-minute fast is, from a health outcomes perspective, a reasonable trade-off when safety and performance matter more than maintaining the exact fasting duration.

What the research does not consistently support is the claim — common in fasting communities — that playing fasted produces superior performance outcomes compared to playing fed. Fat adaptation is real. It may reduce the performance cost of fasting over time. It does not eliminate it — and it does not reverse the fundamental advantage of having available carbohydrate for explosive interval sport.
The honest verdict: intermittent fasting offers genuine health benefits that are relevant and well-documented for the pickleball demographic. Those benefits do not reliably extend to improved on-court performance during fasted sessions. The two goals — metabolic health through fasting and optimal pickleball performance — are compatible when scheduled intelligently and more difficult to combine when ignored.
Schedule around the fast. Consider electrolytes for longer sessions in the heat. Eat before you play if you can. The protocol will survive a banana. Your third game might not survive without one.
