Why Cardio Alone Won’t Make You Faster on a Pickleball Court — And What Actually Will (Explosive Drill Included)
“I run six miles a day. How am I losing to a 70-year-old?”. It’s one of the more common frustrations players bring to the sport — a real fitness background, real conditioning, and still getting outpaced at the kitchen line by someone who looks far less “in shape” on paper.
The answer has nothing to do with effort or toughness. It comes down to two completely different kinds of speed, and most training plans only ever touch one of them.
Two different speeds, two different systems
Cyclical speed is what running, cycling, and most cardio machines train. It’s repeated, predictable movement — your body knows what’s coming next, stride after stride. Reactive speed works differently. It’s unpredictable by definition. It depends on how fast your nervous system can read a signal — a paddle angle, a ball’s spin, a shift in your opponent’s weight — and convert that read into movement, all in a fraction of a second.
These run on different systems in the body. Cardio conditions the aerobic system: heart, lungs, sustained output. Reactive speed runs through the neuromuscular system: nerve-to-muscle signaling, reflexive firing, first-step explosiveness. Training one does not automatically transfer to the other in the way many players expect. A marathoner’s heart rate may stay calmer during a long rally than a beginner’s — and that same marathoner can still get stuck flat-footed on a ball that was, by any reasonable measure, gettable.
That’s exactly what happened to David, a longtime distance runner who joined a local league expecting his conditioning to be an advantage. It wasn’t. He could outlast nearly anyone physically. He kept losing points anyway, beaten not by stamina but by a half-second he didn’t have.
So what actually trains reactive speed?

A simple version: have a partner stand a few feet away and randomly point left, right, or straight ahead, and you move that direction the instant they point, not a beat later. It feels almost too easy in a driveway. On a court, against a real dink, that same half-second of trained delay is the difference between a clean reset and a ball that sails past your shoulder.
Lateral agility work matters more in pickleball than in almost any comparable sport, since so much of the action happens side to side rather than forward and back. Side shuffles, mini-cone patterns, and quick direction-change drills build movement patterns that running simply doesn’t touch — your hips, ankles, and stabilizing muscles learn to fire sideways instead of just forward. Five minutes of cone work before a session, done consistently, tends to show up on court faster than most players expect.
Short-burst power training — split steps, reactive hops, quick start-stop sprints over five or six feet — teaches the legs to load and explode in well under a second, the same skill a sprinter trains, just compressed into the size of a parking space. A pickleball-specific split step looks like this: as your opponent’s paddle makes contact with the ball, hop slightly off the ground and land with your weight balanced, ready to push off in either direction the instant you see where the ball is headed. None of this requires a gym. A patch of driveway, a few cones, and a handful of focused minutes is enough to start building it.

Plenty of players in their sixties and seventies maintain strong cardiovascular fitness through consistent training, while the nerve pathways behind quick-twitch reaction fade earlier if they’re never specifically worked. That’s often the real explanation behind the familiar complaint — “my wind is fine, but my feet just aren’t getting there.” It’s a training gap, not an inevitable consequence of getting older. What’s less commonly known: those pathways stay trainable far longer than most people assume. Reactive speed responds to targeted work at almost any age, often showing measurable improvement within a few weeks of consistent practice.
The mistake most players make once they hear this
Once players understand the cardio/reactive-speed split, the instinct is often to overcorrect — drop the running entirely and chase agility work exclusively. That’s its own kind of mistake. Aerobic conditioning still matters for recovery between points, for staying sharp in a third match of a long tournament day, and for general health. The goal isn’t to replace cardio. It’s to stop expecting it to do a job it was never built for.
A realistic split for most players looks less like an overhaul and more like an addition: keep the runs or rides you already enjoy, and layer in two or three short reaction and agility sessions a week. Ten minutes is enough to start. The sessions don’t need equipment, a coach, or a gym membership — just a partner, a few cones, and consistency.
