Growing up in Taos, New Mexico, Yates Johnson was introduced to sports at an early age, with tennis becoming a significant part of his life. Alongside his twin brother, Hunter, he honed his skills, leading them to become three-time Doubles State high school tennis champions in Arizona. Their collegiate journey took them to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where they played college tennis before transferring to Southern Methodist University in Texas, where they continued to excel in doubles play.

After college, Yates and Hunter turned professional, achieving a career-high ATP doubles ranking of World No. 249 on February 24, 2020. Their professional tennis journey included 13 doubles titles and a notable Challenger semifinal in Savannah in 2018.

In 2021, Yates made the pivotal decision to transition to professional pickleball, marking a new chapter in his athletic career. He quickly adapted to the sport, securing a bronze medal in men’s pro singles at the 2022 PPA Baird Wealth Open. His partnership with Hunter in men’s pro doubles has been particularly successful, with the duo earning multiple medals, including gold at the 2023 APP Cincinnati Vlasic Classic and silver at the 2023 APP The Boca Raton NYC Open.

Yates is known for his aggressive net poaching and sharp third-shot drops, making him a formidable opponent in doubles matches. His playing style is characterized by quick reflexes and strategic positioning, often dictating the pace of the game. Off the court, Yates emphasizes the importance of mental resilience and adaptability, drawing from his experiences in both tennis and pickleball.

He continues to train rigorously, aiming to refine his skills and achieve greater success in the pickleball arena.
