Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Mari Humberg began her athletic journey with tennis at the age of nine, competing in national and international tournaments across four continents. At 18, she received a full scholarship to play for Winthrop University in South Carolina, later transferring to the University of Louisville in Kentucky, where she concluded her collegiate tennis career with over 100 wins. In August 2022, she discovered pickleball and quickly fell in love with the sport, participating in her first professional tournament in December 2022.

Balancing her burgeoning pickleball career with a full-time job, she dedicated 2023 to improving her skills and competing extensively. In 2024, Mari transitioned to professional pickleball full-time, marking a new chapter in her athletic career. Mari’s professional pickleball career has been marked by significant achievements.

In 2024, she earned five medals in PPA events and advanced to No. 19 in the women’s doubles rankings, a remarkable rise from No. 78 at the start of the year.

Her performance in Major League Pickleball (MLP) further solidified her reputation; she was the 33rd overall pick in the 2024 Premier Season draft and contributed to the New Jersey 5s’ success, including a Mid-Season Tournament Championship. In January 2025, Mari joined Adidas Pickleball, a brand she had been associated with during her college tennis days, marking a full-circle moment in her athletic journey. Known for her strategic play and adaptability, Mari has developed a distinctive backhand flick shot that has become a signature move in her repertoire.

This technique, characterized by its precision and deceptive spin, has been instrumental in her success on the court. Fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, she actively promotes the growth of pickleball in both the United States and Brazil. As of November 2025, Mari continues to compete at a high level, aiming to further elevate her game and contribute to the sport’s global expansion.
