Andrea Koop’s journey into the world of sports began with a strong foundation in tennis. Growing up in Michigan, she honed her skills and eventually joined the UCLA Bruins, where she was part of the team that secured the NCAA Women’s Team Championship in 2008. After completing her undergraduate studies, she pursued a law degree at Michigan State University College of Law, graduating with a focus on civil litigation.
In 2017, a former tennis friend introduced her to pickleball, a sport she had initially dismissed after watching a YouTube video. Despite her initial skepticism, she found herself drawn to the game’s competitive nature and the vibrant community surrounding it. This rekindled her passion for competition, leading her to participate in local tournaments and quickly ascend the ranks of professional pickleball.
Her rapid progression in the sport was marked by her first professional tournament in 2017, where she realized how much she missed the thrill of competition. This experience ignited her dedication to the sport, and she began to balance her burgeoning pickleball career with her responsibilities as a civil litigation attorney. By 2021, she had become a gold card pro on the PPA Tour, a testament to her skill and commitment.
In addition to her playing career, Andrea co-founded the Beer City Open Pickleball Championships in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 2018. This annual event has grown significantly, attracting players from across the nation and contributing to the sport’s popularity in the Midwest. Her role as tournament director reflects her dedication to fostering the pickleball community and providing a platform for players to showcase their talents.
As of 2025, Andrea continues to compete at a high level, participating in various tournaments and maintaining a balance between her professional career and athletic pursuits. Her playing style is characterized by quick reflexes and strategic shot placement, skills she attributes to her tennis background.
